What is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, or a physician who specialized in treating issues in the foot, ankle, and lower leg. They generally attend 4 years of schooling after college followed by a minimum of 2 years of residency. Podiatrists are licensed and regulated by state governments, and they must pass the National Board Exams to become licensed. Many choose to become certified in specialties such as orthopedics, primary care, or surgery.

Foot and Ankle Care

Many people equate podiatric care with foot care, but podiatrists are not limited to treating foot pain. They also diagnose and treat ankle and lower leg pain as well as  Some of the conditions a podiatrist can care for include:

  • Bunions, or the painful lump that can form at the base of the big toe.
  • Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail curves down into the flesh of the toe.
  • Hammertoe, or an abnormal bending of a toe at the joint. Hammertoes can be flexible or rigid, with the latter being more severe.
  • Peripheral Artery Disease, is a vascular condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries, particularly in the legs and feet.
  • Plantar Fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, the fibrous tissue along the bottom of the foot connecting the heel bone to the toes.

In short, if there is anything wrong with your feet and ankles, then there is a good chance that a podiatrist, or foot pain physician, can resolve it. Call Podiatry Centers of Maryland to consult with a knowledgeable member of our team.

At Podiatry Centers of Maryland, we begin with conservative foot pain treatment but sometimes it is not enough. When regular foot pain treatment in Lanham doesn’t do the trick, we may recommend surgery. This option is more common for conditions such as severe plantar fasciitis, heel spur(s), and bunions. Our physicians will exhaust every option before resorting to this final solution.
